North Texas Faces More Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Risk Sunday Night Into Monday
NORTH TEXAS — After recording nearly 4 inches of rain on Saturday, North Texas is bracing for another round of heavy rainfall Sunday night into Monday, raising the threat of flash flooding and traffic disruptions across several cities, including Dallas, Fort Worth, and Abilene.
According to meteorologists, a new storm system moving east from Southern California will reach Texas by Sunday, bringing renewed downpours overnight. While forecasters say the atmosphere isn’t as moisture-rich as Saturday’s record-breaking setup, rainfall rates could still reach 1.5 inches per hour in the heaviest pockets.
“Flash flooding is a real concern, especially during the Monday morning rush hour, when roads will already be saturated,” forecasters cautioned.
Flood Watch Possible Overnight
A Flood Watch may be issued for several parts of North Texas as the system pushes through overnight. Areas that already saw high rainfall totals could experience localized flooding, especially in low-lying zones and poorly drained urban neighborhoods.
The National Weather Service says residents should prepare for 1 to 2.5 inches of widespread rainfall, with some isolated spots possibly seeing up to 4 inches before the system moves east by Monday afternoon.
Timing and Impacts
- Rain Arrival: Late Sunday evening, intensifying toward midnight.
- Peak Rainfall: Overnight into early Monday morning.
- Main Impacts: Flooded streets, slowed commutes, and possible travel delays.
While severe storms are not expected, frequent lightning and gusty winds are possible with heavier downpours. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roads and monitor updates throughout the night.
What’s Next for Texas
By Monday afternoon, the rain should taper off, bringing temporary relief. However, forecasters are already tracking another system later in the week, which could extend wet conditions into the Thanksgiving holiday.
