Dakotas–Minnesota Weather Alert: 50 MPH Gusts Possible As Fall Wind Advisory
BISMARCK, ND — A powerful burst of fall winds up to 50 mph is sweeping across the Dakotas and western Minnesota this Sunday, prompting multiple Wind Advisories from the National Weather Service that extend through the afternoon hours.
Strong Winds Across The Northern Plains
According to NWS offices in Bismarck, Aberdeen, and Grand Forks, sustained north to northwest winds will continue through 4 p.m. CDT Sunday, with gusts reaching near 50 mph in parts of central and eastern North Dakota, northeastern South Dakota, and the Red River Valley of Minnesota.
Winds are expected to peak from midmorning through early afternoon before gradually easing toward evening.
Areas under the advisory include Bismarck, Jamestown, Fargo, Aberdeen, Watertown, Sisseton, and Grand Forks, covering counties such as Burleigh, Stutsman, Brown, Codington, and Roberts.
Travel And Power Concerns
The combination of strong crosswinds and low visibility from blowing dust may make travel along Interstates 29 and 94 difficult — particularly for trucks, trailers, and RVs.
Utility crews are preparing for the possibility of isolated power outages caused by falling branches striking power lines. Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture, garbage bins, and harvest equipment before the peak gusts arrive.
Cooler, Drier Air Follows Advisory
By late afternoon, winds will begin to ease to 15–25 mph as a mass of cooler, drier air settles in behind the front. Temperatures will remain in the 50s through the day, dropping into the 30s overnight, signaling the first crisp, breezy start to the new workweek.
The shift in air mass will bring a noticeable taste of fall to the Northern Plains, with clear skies and calmer conditions expected Monday.
