Neuqua Valley’s Jane Riehs spent much of the first 16 years of her life flipping over gymnastics.

She finished second in the state on the balance beam as a freshman, becoming the first state medalist in program history.

Then Riehs began diving, and people are flipping out over her accomplishments. She won the state championship in November, only 14 months after her first dive.

“She’s very intelligent and an absolutely outstanding athlete,” Neuqua diving coach Gerry Petit said. “She can pick up on anything in such a short period of time.”

While Riehs enjoyed plenty of success as a gymnast, the sport took its toll. She endured 10 broken bones and three concussions.
