Downtown Naperville Condo Fire Causes Over $20,000 In Damage
NAPERVILLE, IL — A rooftop fire on a five-story condominium building in downtown Naperville caused over $20,000 in damage Saturday night, but firefighters say quick action prevented the flames from spreading to nearby structures.
Flames Reported On Roof Of South Washington Street Building
According to the Naperville Fire Department, dispatchers received a call around 7:55 p.m. on October 4 reporting flames on the roof of a residential building in the 100 block of South Washington Street.
Fire crews arrived within two minutes and confirmed a working fire on the roof. Using hose lines and an aerial ladder, firefighters accessed the top of the building while ensuring residents safely evacuated.
Crews were able to contain the blaze to the area around a vent stack and fully extinguished the fire within 40 minutes of arrival. Firefighters remained on scene for about half an hour afterward to check for hot spots.
No Injuries, Cause Under Investigation
Officials confirmed that no residents, pets, or firefighters were injured. The building has been deemed safe and habitable, though the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Early findings indicate the fire may have originated near a restaurant vent stack, though investigators have not yet confirmed this as the definitive cause.
The Naperville Police Department and Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Neighboring Restaurant Temporarily Closed
Gia Mia, a restaurant adjacent to the affected property, temporarily closed its doors Saturday and Sunday due to the “nearby fire emergency,” according to a social media post from the business.
The restaurant reopened Monday with limited service while cleanup operations were underway.
Fire Department Urges Caution With Rooftop Equipment
Officials are reminding local property owners and managers to schedule regular maintenance for rooftop vents, HVAC units, and exhaust systems, especially in mixed-use buildings that house restaurants and residences.
Routine inspections can prevent debris buildup and reduce the risk of ignition near ventilation systems.
