Heavy Rain and Flooding Expected Across North Texas Overnight Into Monday Morning

DALLAS–FORT WORTH, TEXAS — North Texas residents should prepare for a wet and stormy Monday morning commute, as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to move through the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex overnight. Meteorologists warn that the system could bring 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, with localized flooding possible by daybreak.

Storms Move In After Midnight

After a quiet and sunny Sunday, conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly overnight. Storms will begin developing in West Texas during the late evening hours and push into North Texas after midnight, bringing heavy rain, frequent lightning, and the potential for minor flooding.

Forecasters say storms could “train” over the same areas, repeatedly dumping rain and increasing the chance of flash flooding in low-lying and urban regions.

Monday Morning Commute Impacts

The heaviest rain is expected to sit directly over the DFW area between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., right during the height of the morning rush hour. Motorists should plan for slow traffic, slick roads, and potential ponding on major highways, including I-35, I-20, and I-30.

“Allow extra travel time Monday morning,” forecasters advised, noting that conditions may improve by midday as the storms begin to move east.

Rainfall Totals and Areas at Risk

Most of North Texas is expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of rain, though isolated areas could see heavier totals — especially within flood-watch zones. By late morning, rainfall will begin to taper off over DFW and shift eastward into Tyler, Longview, and East Texas by the afternoon.

Safety Reminders

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways, even if water levels appear shallow. The National Weather Service reminds residents that it only takes a few inches of moving water to sweep a vehicle away.

Residents should also monitor local alerts overnight and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
