Houston Police Seek Suspect Who Stole Vehicle After Ordering Driver Out in Spanish, Later Crashed and Fled
HOUSTON, TEXAS — The Houston Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man captured on surveillance footage stealing another man’s vehicle after demanding the driver exit the car — reportedly speaking in Spanish during the confrontation.
According to investigators, the incident took place in a parking lot earlier this week, where the suspect approached the victim’s vehicle and ordered him to get out. The victim complied, and the suspect immediately drove off in the stolen vehicle.
Police said the vehicle was involved in an accident the following day, but the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. The department has since released footage from a nearby security camera in hopes that the public can help identify the individual involved.
Caught on Camera
The brief video clip, released by the Houston Police Department, shows a dark-colored SUV parked alongside other vehicles in what appears to be a commercial parking area. Moments later, the suspect can be seen approaching the vehicle, entering it, and speeding away.
Detectives confirmed that the suspect did not brandish a weapon but used forceful verbal commands to take control of the car. Investigators believe the same individual later abandoned the stolen vehicle after being involved in a crash in northwest Houston.
“We’re asking anyone who recognizes this suspect or knows his whereabouts to contact us immediately,” an HPD spokesperson said. “This individual is still at large, and we’re following all available leads.”
Police Investigation Ongoing
Authorities say the stolen vehicle was found damaged but recovered, and no injuries were reported in the crash. The suspect, however, remains unidentified.
Police described the man as Hispanic, last seen wearing dark clothing, and possibly between 25 and 35 years old. He was last seen fleeing on foot from the crash site.
HPD investigators are now reviewing surrounding surveillance footage and gathering witness statements to piece together the suspect’s movements before and after the theft.
How to Help
Anyone with information about the suspect or the vehicle theft is urged to contact the Houston Police Department Auto Theft Division at (713) 308-3500 or to provide an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers of Houston at (713) 222-TIPS.
Police are reminding residents to remain cautious when entering or exiting their vehicles and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
