Indiana Couple Finds 2.71-Carat Diamond at Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds State Park

MURFREESBORO, Arkansas — An Indiana couple’s “road trip of a lifetime” turned unforgettable when they unearthed a 2.71-carat white diamond during their second visit to Crater of Diamonds State Park in southwest Arkansas.

A Lucky Return Visit

According to the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, Dewy White of Paoli, Indiana, made the discovery while sifting through dirt in the park’s Canary Hill area last Thursday.

The couple had visited the park earlier in the week but left empty-handed after two full days of digging. On their way back home, they decided to stop once more — a choice that would lead to one of the park’s biggest finds of the year.

“It looked like a metal piece of glass,” White said. “The minute I saw it in my shovel, I knew.”

‘Thank You, Jesus!’ — A Moment of Pure Joy

White said he immediately realized the shimmering object in his shovel was something special.

“It just looked different from everything else around it,” he said. “I picked it up and shouted, ‘Thank you, Jesus!’”

Park staff later confirmed the stone as a 2.71-carat white diamond, making it the fourth-largest diamond registered at the park in 2025.

Naming His Diamond ‘Hope’

White chose to name his find the “Hope Diamond”, saying the name came from his faith and belief that patience would pay off.

“It’s been our dream to travel together and do things like this,” his wife said. “Finding this diamond made our road trip feel like destiny.”

A Park Known for Big Finds

Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only diamond-producing site in the world open to the public, allowing visitors to keep whatever gems they discover. The park has produced thousands of diamonds over the years, including the 40.23-carat Uncle Sam Diamond — the largest ever found in the United States.

Officials say the Whites’ discovery has sparked renewed interest among visitors, many hoping to strike luck of their own before the year ends.
