Iowa–Illinois Weather Alert: Scattered Showers And Thunder Expected Late Tonight
DAVENPORT, IA — After nearly two weeks without measurable rain, residents across eastern Iowa and western Illinois can expect a return of scattered showers and isolated thunder late Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service Quad Cities.
Overnight Rain Returns To The Region
Forecasters say the first round of rain will develop after midnight, with the heaviest coverage west of the Mississippi River and north of Interstate 80. The system is expected to pass through the region by late Monday afternoon, bringing brief but much-needed precipitation.
Despite the rain, totals will remain light — under 0.25 inches in most locations — meaning it will do little to ease the region’s ongoing dry conditions. The last measurable rainfall for much of eastern Iowa and western Illinois occurred on September 23.
Thunder Possible, But No Severe Weather Expected
According to the NWS, isolated rumbles of thunder are possible early Monday, but severe weather is not anticipated. Residents may experience brief periods of heavier rain or lightning, especially in areas north of the Quad Cities.
Temperatures are forecast to stay near seasonal averages, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s following the showers. Winds are expected to remain light as the weather system shifts eastward into central Illinois by Monday evening.
Fall Dry Spell Nearing An End
The return of rainfall marks a short break from the dry pattern that has persisted across much of the region since late September. Meteorologists say additional light precipitation chances may follow later in the week as cooler air pushes in from the northwest.
