Kansas Weather Alert: Severe Storms And 65 MPH Winds Possible Tonight
WICHITA, KS — Residents across central and eastern Kansas are being warned to prepare for strong to severe thunderstorms tonight, with hail and wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.
Storms Developing This Evening
Meteorologists say scattered thunderstorms will begin forming late Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday night. The highest storm chances are expected west of Wichita, including Russell (83%), Salina (67%), and Hutchinson (42%).
The system will move east overnight, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds to much of central and eastern Kansas.
Severe Weather Threat
Forecasters warn that some of the storms could become severe, producing quarter-sized hail and damaging wind gusts up to 65 mph. Rain chances remain elevated Monday, with 63% in Salina, 55% in Emporia, and 61% in Topeka.
Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions during the evening travel hours. Power outages and minor property damage are possible in areas affected by strong gusts.
Safety And Travel Precautions
Drivers are advised to use extra caution, particularly on highways where slick roads and reduced visibility may develop quickly. The National Weather Service recommends securing outdoor items and moving vehicles away from trees or power lines before storms arrive.
Officials also urge residents to avoid flooded roadways and stay indoors during lightning activity.
Cooler Start To The Week
Storm chances will gradually decrease Monday evening, with cooler temperatures settling in across much of Kansas. Highs are expected to fall into the 70s, bringing a more typical fall pattern for early October.
