Nebraska Extends Health Alert For Lakes Over Toxic Algae

LINCOLN, NE — Nebraska officials have extended a health alert for harmful algal blooms (HABs) at lakes in eastern Nebraska after water samples showed toxin levels above the state’s safety threshold.

Lakes Under Health Alert

The Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (DWEE) announced that Maple Creek Recreation Area Lake in Colfax County and Rockford Lake in Gage County remain under alert. A previous alert for Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson County has been lifted after new testing showed safer levels.

Samples collected earlier this week revealed concentrations of microcystin toxins above the state’s eight parts per billion threshold. These toxins, released by certain strains of blue-green algae, can cause health issues if ingested or if swimmers come into contact with the water.

Safety Measures And Restrictions

When a health alert is issued, swimming beaches at the affected lakes are closed. While fishing and boating are still permitted, visitors are urged to avoid any activity that could lead to swallowing the water.

Officials warn that pets should not enter or drink the lake water, as exposure can be dangerous. Other public areas, including camping sites and picnic grounds, remain open for safe use.

End Of Sampling Season

The HAB sampling program, conducted each year from May through September, has now concluded for the season. This week’s results mark the final round of testing for 2025, though posted alerts will remain in place until toxin levels fall below the safety limit.
