Quarter-Sized Hail Alert

Nebraska Weather Alert: Quarter-Sized Hail And 60 MPH Winds Possible After 4 PM Sunday

HASTINGS, NE — Residents in south-central and southeastern Nebraska should prepare for potentially severe thunderstorms this afternoon, as forecasters warn of hail up to one inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph after 4 p.m. Sunday.

Storms Expected To Develop Late Afternoon

The National Weather Service in Hastings says the highest threat window for storms will develop between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., affecting areas including Hebron, Superior, Franklin, and Concordia.

Although the tornado risk remains low, forecasters caution that hail-producing storms could strengthen quickly, creating localized hazards for drivers, outdoor gatherings, and late-day events.

Rainfall And Localized Flooding Possible

Meteorologists note that some areas could see 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period, raising the risk of minor flooding in low-lying and poorly drained locations.

The Storm Prediction Center’s Day 1 Outlook places the region under a Level 1 (Marginal) Risk, meaning isolated severe storms are possible. Most storms will remain scattered but could briefly reach severe limits before moving east overnight.

Residents Advised To Prepare

Officials are urging residents to secure outdoor furniture and vehicles and stay alert for changing weather conditions. Those traveling on Highway 81 and I-80 corridors are encouraged to monitor radar updates and plan for potential delays due to heavy rainfall and hail.

The NWS recommends moving vehicles under shelter where possible to prevent hail damage and avoiding outdoor activity during periods of lightning.

Start Of The Week Outlook

Storm chances will decrease overnight into Monday morning, with cooler, breezy conditions following the passing front. Highs on Monday are expected to reach the low 70s, marking a more fall-like start to the week across much of Nebraska.
