New Jersey Wawa Cashier Pepper-Sprayed in Early Morning Robbery; Suspect Remains at Large
TOMS RIVER, NEW JERSEY — Authorities are investigating a violent early-morning robbery at a Wawa convenience store in Toms River, where a cashier was pepper-sprayed in the face by a suspect before he fled with cash from the register.
The incident occurred around 12:18 a.m. on November 9, 2025, at the Wawa store located along a busy commercial stretch of town. According to police, a male suspect entered the store and pretended to purchase Black & Mild cigarettes. When the cashier opened the register, the man suddenly sprayed her in the face with what is believed to be pepper spray or mace.
The victim immediately suffered temporary blindness, burning irritation, and severe eye pain, authorities said. She sought medical treatment at a nearby hospital for her injuries.
Suspect Escaped After Spraying Cashier
Following the assault, the suspect jumped over the counter, grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, and fled the store before officers arrived.
Surveillance footage from inside the Wawa shows the suspect wearing a hooded sweatshirt and face covering, concealing his identity. Investigators believe he may have been familiar with the store’s layout and cash-handling routine.
Police are reviewing security camera recordings and speaking with nearby businesses to trace the suspect’s movements before and after the robbery.
Employee Recovering, Police Seek Public’s Help
The cashier, whose name has not been released, is recovering after receiving hospital treatment for chemical exposure to her eyes. Authorities said the quick medical response prevented permanent damage.
Toms River Police have not yet made any arrests and are urging anyone with information about the robbery or the suspect’s identity to come forward.
Wawa Responds to Incident
A spokesperson for Wawa confirmed that they are cooperating with local law enforcement and reviewing internal security footage.
“Our top priority is the safety of our associates and customers,” the statement read. “We are working closely with investigators to identify the individual responsible for this senseless act.”
Public Safety Reminder
Police reminded residents and late-night store workers to remain alert, especially during overnight hours when robberies are more likely to occur. Officers emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious behavior immediately.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is encouraged to contact the Toms River Police Department or submit anonymous tips through the department’s crime line.
