North Dakota Highway Turns Treacherous as Winter Storm Creates Whiteout Conditions Near Mandan
MANDAN, NORTH DAKOTA — A powerful winter storm swept across central North Dakota early Monday, creating dangerous driving conditions and whiteout visibility along Interstate 94 near mile marker 147, just west of Mandan.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol shared photos from the scene showing patrol vehicles coated in snow and ice as troopers assisted stranded motorists in near-zero visibility.
Travel Conditions Deteriorate Across Central North Dakota
Authorities report that road conditions quickly deteriorated overnight as snow accumulation and strong winds combined to form blowing and drifting snow along major routes, including I-94.
The National Weather Service said wind gusts between 30–40 mph are contributing to poor visibility, with snow continuing through much of the day.
Troopers are urging travelers to reduce speeds, keep headlights on, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
“Please slow down and give our first responders room to work,” state officials advised. “Visibility is extremely poor, and icy patches are developing fast.”
Thanking First Responders Amid Severe Conditions
The Highway Patrol also thanked local first responders, snowplow crews, and emergency personnel for working in hazardous conditions to assist stranded drivers and maintain access to rural communities.
Officials expect the storm to ease later Monday evening but warn that sub-zero wind chills will linger through Tuesday morning.
Residents and drivers are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and check North Dakota road condition maps before traveling.
