OKLAHOMA — Weather models are signaling a bitter chill ahead for the Southern Plains, with single-digit wind chills expected early Saturday morning across much of Oklahoma and parts of northern Texas. The forecast, supported by both GFS and EURO weather models, shows Arctic air settling into the region, marking one of the coldest mornings so far this December.
Coldest Air of the Season to Sweep the Plains
Meteorologists report that temperatures will plummet late Friday night as a surge of Arctic air sweeps southward. Actual air readings are projected to dip into the teens, while wind chills could fall as low as 3–8°F across northern Oklahoma, extending toward the Red River region.
Strong north winds behind the front will enhance the cold, with gusts between 20–30 mph in some open areas. These winds will push “feels-like” temperatures near or below zero in rural zones, making early-morning outdoor activity especially hazardous without proper protection.
Texas Also in the Freeze Zone
Northern Texas will not be spared. Areas from Wichita Falls to Denton could see wind chills in the teens, while Oklahoma City and Tulsa brace for readings near single digits by sunrise Saturday.
Meteorologists say this event will mark a brief but intense Arctic intrusion, though daytime highs will slowly rebound into the 30s and 40s by Sunday afternoon.
Residents Urged to Take Precautions
Officials urge residents to dress in layers and limit exposure during the coldest hours of the morning. Pets, livestock, and outdoor water lines should also be protected against the freeze.
While no major snowfall is expected with this front, forecasters warn that slick spots could still develop on bridges or elevated roads due to lingering moisture from recent rain.
Cold weather enthusiasts, however, may see this as a preview of what’s ahead. Long-range models suggest additional Arctic air intrusions could arrive before the end of the month.
