Oklahoma City Police Sting Operation Captures Houston Men Targeting ATM Customers

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma — Two men from Houston, Texas, were arrested last week after an Oklahoma City Police Department sting operation caught them in the act of targeting ATM users and attempting to steal cash from vehicles.

Undercover Officers Catch “Jugging” Suspects in Action

Police say the two suspects were involved in a type of theft known as “jugging,” where criminals watch people withdraw cash from ATMs and then follow them to steal the money.

On September 4, Oklahoma City police launched an undercover operation to catch the suspects in action. Officers released footage showing a plainclothes officer withdrawing cash from an ATM before getting into an unmarked vehicle.

As the officer drove off, an SUV began tailing the vehicle. The entire sequence was monitored from a police helicopter overhead as the suspects followed the decoy car to a nearby store.

Video Shows Arrest After Smash-and-Grab Attempt

Once the undercover officer parked and entered the store, surveillance video showed one of the suspects breaking the passenger-side window of the car to grab what was inside.

Within moments, undercover officers swarmed the scene, chasing and tackling the suspect as additional units moved in. Both men were taken into custody without further incident.

The suspects — both from Houston — were booked on charges of burglary, conspiracy, and obstruction.

Police Warn of Growing “Jugging” Trend

Oklahoma City police say jugging crimes are on the rise nationwide, often targeting banks and ATMs near busy shopping centers.

“These suspects follow you after you withdraw cash, so always stay aware of your surroundings,” a department spokesperson said. “Avoid showing cash in public, lock your vehicle, and if you think you’re being followed, drive straight to a police or fire station.”

The department says residents should remain alert, especially during holiday shopping months, when jugging activity tends to spike.
