Oklahoma Fans Choose the Heartland Flyer Over I-35 Gridlock for the Red River Rivalry
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma — For many Sooner fans, the journey to the Red River Rivalry is just as legendary as the game itself — but this year, more fans are skipping the gridlock on Interstate 35 and taking the Heartland Flyer train straight to Dallas.
Fans Trading Traffic for Comfort
The Heartland Flyer, operated by Amtrak in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), offers a direct route from Oklahoma City to Dallas, dropping passengers near the Cotton Bowl for the annual OU–Texas showdown.
“It’ll take you directly into Dallas, so you’re right near the Cotton Bowl and ready to enjoy all the festivities,” said Jared Schwennesen from ODOT.
For fans like Ruth Wooten, the trip offers a relaxing alternative to the long drive.
“I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment,” she said. “You see things you’d never notice from behind the wheel.”
The Train Ride Becomes a Rolling Pep Rally
Each year, the Friday train before the game fills up fast, turning into what riders call a “mobile tailgate.” Schwennesen described the scene as pure Sooner spirit.
“It’s pretty much crimson and cream when you walk through the doors of the Santa Fe Station,” he said.
The train departs on Friday morning and returns Sunday, making it a convenient weekend trip for fans eager to skip the chaos of game-day traffic.
Funding Questions, But Service Rolls On
The Heartland Flyer has faced funding uncertainty in recent years, with state and regional partners working to keep the service operational.
“Oklahoma is going to do everything on our end to make sure this line keeps running,” Schwennesen said. “We’re also hoping our Texas partners continue supporting it long-term.”
Despite budget concerns, ridership has remained strong — especially during major sporting events like the Red River Rivalry — proving the route’s continued popularity with both fans and commuters.
A Relaxed Ride to Rivalry Weekend
For fans heading to Dallas, the train offers an old-fashioned, stress-free journey that swaps honking horns for rolling countryside views — and transforms travel time into part of the Red River tradition.
