Oklahoma Fire Weather Alert: Warm, Breezy Conditions Raise Sunday Fire Risk
TULSA, OK — The National Weather Service in Tulsa has issued a fire weather alert for Sunday as warm temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds combine to create increased wildfire risk across parts of Oklahoma.
Elevated Fire Risk Across Northeast Oklahoma
Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 80s to near 90°F, with south winds gusting up to 25 mph and humidity levels dropping to around 30–35%. These dry, breezy conditions are particularly concerning west of Tulsa and south of Highway 412, where rainfall has been scarce in recent weeks.
The Oklahoma Mesonet and U.S. Drought Monitor both indicate that northeast Oklahoma remains especially vulnerable to grass and brush fires, with dry soils and above-average temperatures increasing ignition potential.
Officials Urge Caution Outdoors
Emergency management officials are reminding residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and refrain from idling vehicles on dry grass. Even small sparks can quickly escalate into large fires under current weather conditions.
Outdoor equipment, such as lawn mowers and power tools, should also be used cautiously, as hot exhaust or metal contact can ignite dry vegetation.
Rain Relief Expected Monday
A shift in weather is expected Monday, with isolated thunderstorms likely to develop in northwest Arkansas and far eastern Oklahoma. While forecasters do not expect severe weather, brief heavy downpours and cloud-to-ground lightning could occur in localized areas.
Meteorologists say the best chance for rain will come from mid- to late-afternoon Monday, providing minor relief to drought-stricken parts of the region.
Stay Weather-Aware
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and remain alert to rapid changes in wind and humidity levels through the evening. Local fire departments and emergency crews remain on standby as conditions stay elevated through sunset.
