COOK COUNTY, IL — A new variant of the coronavirus — omicron — has emerged, causing concern around the globe.
The variant was first reported to the World Health Organization on Wednesday by South African health officials after identifying a case there. Since then, cases have been reported in Belgium, Canada, Israel, Hong Kong and Britain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
WHO has since labeled it a “variant of concern” due to its large number of mutations and possibly faster rate of infection.
