Rhode Island Shooting Claims Life of 19-Year-Old Brown University Sophomore From Alabama Remembered As “Bright Light”

RHODE ISLAND — A 19-year-old Brown University sophomore from Alabama, identified as Ella Cook, was one of two students killed in a mass shooting Saturday afternoon inside the Barus and Holley engineering building during a finals review session on the Providence campus.

Victim Remembered as a “Bright Light”

Cook, who began her studies at Brown in 2024, was honored during a Sunday church service at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama, where she was remembered as a “bright light.” She was active in campus life and served as vice president of Brown University’s College Republicans club.

Friends, classmates, and faith community members described her as deeply engaged, kind-hearted, and passionate about her academic work.

What Authorities Have Confirmed

According to officials, the shooting occurred during a scheduled review session inside the engineering building. In addition to the two fatalities, nine other students were injured, with conditions varying:

  • One victim is in critical condition
  • Several victims are in stable condition
  • One student has been treated and released

Police say a man who was previously detained as a person of interest has since been released as the investigation continues.
