Sister Stops Speaking to Sibling After Being Told She Can’t Stay for Months During Extended Vacation
ILLINOIS — A woman has shared her story online about how her sister cut off contact for over a year after she refused to let her stay “as long as needed” during an extended family vacation abroad.
The woman, who works from home with her boyfriend, said she was initially excited when her sister and her family announced plans to visit the country she lives in. But that excitement faded as she realized the visit wasn’t just a short trip — her sister was planning to stay for several months and expected to live in her home the entire time.
Months-Long Stay Becomes a Point of Conflict
According to her account, the sister provided no clear plan or end date, simply stating they’d be staying for “a couple of months.” Both she and her boyfriend work full time from home, making the idea of hosting two additional people — who also planned to work remotely — especially stressful.
“We only have three bedrooms,” she wrote. “If they stayed, I would need to move my workspace into our bedroom — and on top of that, they’d be working late because of time zone differences.”
Despite the logistical challenges, the woman said she tried to compromise, offering her sister and her family a three-week stay — two weeks in her home, plus an additional week for sightseeing or road trips. She even offered to cover all expenses and lend her car for travel.
Sister Reacts With Anger
Instead of appreciating the offer, her sister allegedly became furious, accusing her of being inconsiderate. “How dare you give a time limit,” the sister reportedly said before cutting off communication completely.
The two have not spoken in a year, despite the woman’s attempts to reach out. The fallout has left her confused and saddened, especially since her sister has yet to meet her boyfriend.

Online Reactions Support the Woman
Thousands of online readers have weighed in, overwhelmingly supporting the woman’s decision. Many said that setting boundaries — especially when sharing a home for an extended period — is reasonable and necessary.
“You gave a generous offer,” one commenter wrote. “She wanted to take advantage of your kindness, not visit you.”
Another added, “It’s wild how people expect free housing for months and then get mad when you say no.”
While the sisters remain estranged, the woman says she stands by her decision: “I wanted to help, but not at the cost of my peace and work life.”
