Southern California to See Strong Santa Ana Winds Friday Night, Gusts Reaching 50 MPH Could Uproot Trees

CALIFORNIA — A strong Santa Ana wind event is developing across Southern California late Friday into early Saturday, with wind gusts expected to reach between 35 and 50 mph in foothill and mountain areas from Santa Barbara to San Diego.

According to meteorologists, the pattern will persist through Saturday morning, primarily impacting Los Angeles County, Ventura County, and the Inland Empire. Despite the strength of the winds, fire danger remains low due to recent rainfall that has kept vegetation moist.

Wind Forecast and Areas of Concern

The National Weather Service warns that while wildfire risk is minimal, saturated soils from earlier rain events could increase the risk of uprooted trees and minor damage, especially in the areas experiencing the strongest gusts.
Communities like Oxnard, Santa Clarita, Long Beach, and Riverside are likely to feel the effects overnight, while gusts may weaken gradually into Saturday afternoon.

“Even though the fire danger is limited, residents should still take precautions against downed branches or loose outdoor items,” forecasters advised.

Timing and Safety Tips

  • Strongest winds: Late Friday night through early Saturday morning
  • Peak gusts: 35–50 mph, locally higher in mountain passes
  • Impact areas: Foothills, valleys, and coastal ranges from Santa Barbara to San Diego
  • Risk: Low fire potential but increased chance of tree falls and minor debris hazards

Residents are encouraged to avoid parking vehicles under large trees and secure outdoor furniture before the winds intensify.

Weekend Outlook

Conditions should stabilize by Saturday afternoon, with calmer winds and clear skies expected through the rest of the weekend. Another weak system could bring light rain or fog to the region early next week, though no major weather concerns are currently forecasted.
