Stockton Rapper MBnel Reportedly in Hiding After Being Shot During Birthday Party Mass Shooting That Left Three Children Dead
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA — Stockton-based rapper MBnel, whose real name is Johnel Dongon, is reportedly in hiding after being shot and wounded during a mass shooting at a child’s birthday party that left three children and one adult dead over the weekend.
According to his father, Junior Dongon, MBnel and his wife were both hit by gunfire during the chaotic shooting inside Monkey Space, a banquet hall in Stockton, on Saturday evening. Authorities confirmed that 15 people were shot during the incident, which police believe was connected to ongoing gang conflicts in the city.
“He Was Shot, But He’s OK,” Says Father
Speaking to The New York Post, MBnel’s father said his son was attending a friend’s 2-year-old daughter’s birthday party when gunfire erupted.
“He just came to drop off a present at his friend’s party, whose daughter was the celebrant,” Junior Dongon said.
“He was shot, but he’s OK. … He called me and said, ‘Don’t say anything to anybody.’”
Dongon added that MBnel’s wife was also struck during the attack, sustaining a non-life-threatening injury.
“My daughter-in-law was hit in the butt,” Dongon said. “We are worried. I’m worried about my wife, but I can’t do anything about it.”
Rapper Had Previously Fled Stockton Over Safety Concerns
MBnel, who gained popularity for his music reflecting life in Stockton’s streets, had moved out of the city two years ago after several violent encounters and threats.
His father said the rapper relocated because he feared for his safety following an incident where gunmen fired 22 bullets at his parents’ home. Despite leaving the area, MBnel returned briefly for the weekend celebration.
“He feared for his life, but he just wanted to be there for a friend’s child,” his father said.
Stockton Police Investigate Gang Violence Connection
The shooting broke out during the crowded celebration, sending families scrambling for safety. Stockton Police said at least 15 people were hit by gunfire, including multiple children. Three young victims and one adult male died from their injuries.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi described the tragedy as “another heartbreaking act of gang-related violence” that has shaken the entire community.
“Three children’s lives were stolen at a birthday party — a place meant for joy, not death,” Fugazi said. “This level of senseless violence cannot continue.”
Police have not released details about potential suspects or arrests, but sources close to the investigation told local outlets that multiple shooters may have been involved, possibly as part of a targeted retaliation between rival groups.
Father Says MBnel Is “Laying Low”
Following the shooting, Dongon said his son has gone into hiding and is avoiding public appearances while he recovers from his injuries.
“He’s scared for his life,” Dongon said. “He’s not saying where he is. I think he just wants to stay quiet right now.”
Community leaders in Stockton say the incident underscores the urgent need for anti-gang initiatives and stronger protections for families caught in crossfire.
As the investigation continues, officials are urging anyone with information about the suspects or the shooting to contact Stockton Crime Stoppers anonymously.
