Two Dead, Three Hurt — Including Baby — in Head-On Crash in Reno County
NICKERSON, Kansas — Authorities in Reno County say two people were killed and three others were injured, including a baby, after a head-on collision Monday morning on K-14 Highway near 82nd Avenue.
Crash Details Released by Sheriff’s Office
According to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 10:14 a.m. in the 8200 block of North K-14 Highway. Investigators said a silver Subaru SUV was traveling northbound when it crossed the center line, veering into the southbound lane.
A red Ford F-150 truck traveling in the opposite direction pulled to the right shoulder in an attempt to avoid the crash, but the Subaru reportedly swerved into the same shoulder, resulting in a head-on collision.
Victims and Injuries
Four people — including a baby — were inside the Subaru when it crashed. Two of the occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The baby and another passenger were transported first to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and later to a Wichita hospital for additional treatment.
The driver of the Ford truck, the only person inside that vehicle, was taken by private vehicle to Lyons Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials said the names of those killed will be released once family notifications are complete.
Community Members Helped at the Scene
The sheriff’s office noted that several bystanders stopped to help the victims, providing assistance and helping control traffic before first responders arrived.
Authorities continue to investigate what caused the Subaru to cross into oncoming traffic.
