‘We should be angry’: Kansas City Teen Fatally Shot Near Bay Water Park

KANSAS CITY, MO — A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed near Kansas City’s Bay Water Park on Saturday evening, sparking renewed calls for community action against youth violence.

Teen Identified As Ta’Kori Jones

Police identified the victim as Ta’Kori Jones, who was shot just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday near Longview Road, outside the popular south Kansas City water park. Officers said Jones was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The park, which has been closed for the season, reportedly remains a frequent gathering spot for neighborhood teens. On Sunday, residents described the area as unusually quiet — a stark contrast to the chaos that unfolded the day before.

“We Should Be Angry”

Community advocate Rosilyn Temple, founder of KC Mothers in Charge, said the shooting should anger everyone who cares about Kansas City’s future.

“As a community, we should be angry that a 16-year-old life was taken,” Temple said.

She added that she plans to reach out to the victim’s family to offer comfort and support.

“It is very sad. Another mother that I have to reach out to and go give her a hug,” Temple said.

Police Seek Witnesses And Video

Investigators said several people were involved in an interaction before gunfire erupted. A nearby gas station clerk told KMBC that officers reviewed security footage as part of their ongoing investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information, cellphone video, or surveillance footage to come forward.

Ongoing Problem Of Teen Violence

Kansas City leaders say the shooting is another painful example of a growing cycle of youth violence in the city. Organizations like KC Mothers in Charge continue to work with police and schools to promote peace and mentorship programs for at-risk teens.

Temple emphasized the importance of community involvement:

“We have to help the police. We as a community have to have an answer for this so we can get these people out of our streets.”

As police continue searching for the suspect or suspects involved, residents are calling for accountability and investment in youth safety programs before more lives are lost.
