According to Guinness World Records, the “longest time in an abdominal plank position” is eight hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds and was completed by former Marine George Hood in Naperville, Illinois on 15 February 2020.

It’s an impressive feat but unless you’re looking to run the clock down on your life, it’s pretty much the opposite of what you should be aiming for when you include the classic core move in your workout routine.

You see, while the plank is an excellent exercise it is quality and tension (engaging your muscles), rather than time, that should be your primary focus. When Hood stays in the plank position for hours, he’s trying to make it as easy as possible and minimize the demand on his muscles. You, on the other hand, are looking to give your abs and overall midsection a short, sharp challenge.
