26 Arrested, Dozens of Birds Rescued in Massive Southern California Cockfighting Bust

HESPERIA, Calif. — A major illegal cockfighting ring was dismantled in Southern California over the weekend after authorities arrested 26 people and rescued dozens of birds during a raid in Hesperia, officials confirmed Sunday.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies conducted the early-morning operation at a commercial property suspected of hosting underground cockfights. When officers arrived, they found a large-scale setup complete with bird cages, fighting pits, cash, and paraphernalia associated with gambling and animal cruelty.

26 Suspects Taken Into Custody

Authorities said the bust followed weeks of investigation after deputies received reports of suspicious activity and loud gatherings at the location.

When law enforcement moved in, they detained multiple people on-site, recovering evidence of organized gambling operations and entry fees for the illegal fights.

A total of 26 individuals were arrested on charges that include animal cruelty, illegal gambling, and participating in a cockfighting event, according to a sheriff’s spokesperson.

Dozens of Birds Saved from Cruel Conditions

Officials confirmed that dozens of roosters and hens were found in poor condition, many showing signs of abuse consistent with cockfighting. Some birds had been fitted with metal spurs, a common weapon used in these fights to inflict injuries.

Animal control officers were called in to rescue the surviving birds. They were transported to safe shelters for medical evaluation and rehabilitation.

“These animals were kept solely for entertainment and gambling purposes,” said Sgt. Jason Finley with the Sheriff’s Rural Crimes Task Force. “It’s not just illegal — it’s cruel and inhumane.”

Thousands in Cash and Equipment Seized

Investigators also seized thousands of dollars in cash, along with specialized equipment including training materials, transport crates, and custom apparel tied to cockfighting organizations.

Photos released by authorities show several stacks of bills and clothing embroidered with rooster logos and team names such as Perez GameFowl and Rooster Exclusive Mexico-USA.

Community Outrage and Ongoing Investigation

Local animal welfare advocates have condemned the illegal operation, calling it a “disturbing reminder” of the underground gambling culture that continues to exploit animals.

“This kind of cruelty has no place in our communities,” said Karen Mendoza, director of the California Animal Protection League. “We’re grateful that law enforcement took decisive action before more animals were harmed.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the investigation remains ongoing, with possible additional arrests expected as officials work to identify other suspects and locations connected to the case.

Animal Cruelty Penalties in California

Cockfighting is a felony offense in California, carrying penalties that include up to three years in prison and fines reaching $10,000 per violation. Possession of birds or equipment used in such operations is also illegal under state law.

Authorities have urged the public to report any suspected animal fighting operations through the Sheriff’s Animal Cruelty hotline or local law enforcement.
