Freeze Warning Issued Across Texas and Oklahoma as Temperatures Plunge into 20s
TEXAS — A widespread Freeze Warning has been issued across much of Texas and Oklahoma, marking the coldest night of the season so far as temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s by Monday morning, forecasters said.
Freeze Warning Now Covers Most of Texas and Oklahoma
According to meteorologists, the warning area has expanded into the Texas Hill Country and now includes north, east, and central Texas, as well as most of Oklahoma. Residents in cities such as Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, Austin, and Oklahoma City are urged to prepare for a hard freeze overnight.
The National Weather Service says the Freeze Warning will remain in effect through Monday morning, with forecasters warning of a “killing freeze” that could damage or destroy unprotected outdoor plants and sensitive crops.
“The Freeze Warning has expanded into the Texas Hill Country and now includes most of Oklahoma, north and east Texas,” meteorologists reported. “A killing freeze is likely tonight through Monday morning with lows in the 20s.”
Cold Air Grips the Region Overnight
The Arctic air mass that began pushing south over the weekend has settled firmly across the central United States, bringing clear skies and subfreezing air that will cause temperatures to drop rapidly after sunset.
Forecast models indicate lows between 22°F and 28°F across much of North and Central Texas, while Hill Country towns such as Kerrville and Fredericksburg could dip into the upper teens.
In Oklahoma, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Bartlesville are also expected to see overnight lows in the 20s, with wind chills making it feel even colder.
Freeze Watch Still in Effect for West Texas
Areas farther west — including Midland and Abilene — remain under a Freeze Watch, with forecasters expecting temperatures to fall near freezing but not as low as in the central and eastern parts of the state.
The National Weather Service said additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
Precautions Urged for Residents
Residents are advised to take precautions to protect pets, plants, pipes, and outdoor plumbing systems. Farmers and ranchers in the Hill Country are also being warned to safeguard livestock and water supplies against the overnight cold.
Officials also encourage residents to check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heating as temperatures plunge.
Coldest Morning of the Season Expected
By early Monday, much of Texas will experience its first widespread freeze of the year, with forecasters calling it the coldest morning of the season so far. Temperatures are expected to moderate slightly by midweek, though another cold front may arrive later in the week.
