Tampa Man Arrested After Setting Ex-Girlfriend’s Boyfriend Car on Fire During Morning Rush

TAMPA, FLORIDA — Police say a 29-year-old man with a documented history of domestic violence was arrested within hours Tuesday morning after a black BMW—belonging to his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend—was set on fire in downtown Tampa during the commute.

Rapid Series of 911 Calls and a Car Ablaze

According to Tampa Police, officers were dispatched around 8:17 a.m. to North Ashley Drive and West Polk Street for a report of a man trying to break into a BMW. Minutes later, the same vehicle was reported engulfed in flames with its rear window shattered. Tampa Fire Rescue quickly extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Detectives Identify Ex as the Motive, Suspect as Serxhio Nokaj

Tampa Police and Tampa Fire Rescue’s Arson Investigation Unit identified Serxhio Nokaj, 29, as the suspect and linked the fire to an ongoing domestic dispute. Investigators say the car’s owner is the current boyfriend of Nokaj’s former partner, who has previously reported stalking and domestic violence involving Nokaj.

“Tampa officers followed every lead and removed a violent offender from the streets within hours,” Police Chief Lee Bercaw said, praising the swift response.

Arrest and Charges

Within two hours, officers located and arrested Nokaj near 2905 W. Bay Court Avenue. In addition to two outstanding warrants for Failure to Appear – Stalking and Failure to Appear – Battery (Domestic Violence), Nokaj now faces new charges:

  • Arson
  • Burglary of an Unoccupied Vehicle
  • Felony Criminal Mischief
  • Possession of Cannabis (over 20 grams)
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

He was booked into Orient Road Jail as the investigation continues.
