Storm System to Bring Heavy Rain and Commuter Delays to Southern California Thursday

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — A strong Pacific storm system is expected to arrive in Southern California by Thursday afternoon, bringing steady rain, localized flooding, and slow commutes across the region from Los Angeles to San Diego.

Meteorologists warn that the system will move in just in time for the afternoon rush hour, producing slick roadways, reduced visibility, and nuisance flooding on major highways including I-5, I-10, and I-405.

Heavy Rain During Peak Commute Hours

According to early models, rainfall will begin across Los Angeles County by mid to late afternoon before spreading south toward Orange County and San Diego County by early evening.
Localized rainfall totals may reach 0.5 to 1 inch, with higher amounts possible in foothill and mountain areas such as San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

“It’s a good idea to work from home or leave work early if possible,” weather experts advised. “The heaviest rain will coincide with peak traffic hours, making for a messy commute.”

Flooding Concerns in Low-Lying Areas

The combination of heavy showers and already damp ground could lead to minor street flooding, especially in areas prone to drainage issues.
Drivers are urged to use caution and avoid flooded roadways, as even shallow water can cause vehicles to lose control.

Communities including Irvine, Long Beach, Encinitas, and Escondido may see temporary ponding of water on road surfaces.

Cooler Air and Showers to Follow

Behind the main system, cooler air will settle across the region into Friday, with lingering scattered showers expected through the morning hours.
Conditions are forecast to dry out by late Friday, giving way to a cool but calmer weekend.

Residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and plan for longer travel times during the Thursday evening commute.
