Heavy Snow Expected in Washington’s Cascade Passes Sunday Night Into Monday Morning Ahead of Thanksgiving Travel

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — A new Pacific storm system is set to move into Western Washington late this weekend, bringing the potential for heavy mountain snow just as Thanksgiving week travel begins. Forecasters say snow will begin falling in the Cascade passes Sunday night, continuing into Monday morning, and could make for challenging driving conditions across the region.

Up to 8 Inches Expected in the Cascades

According to regional forecasts, snow levels will drop to around 2,500 feet, with 3 to 8 inches of snow possible at Snoqualmie and Stevens Passes. These elevations are expected to experience the most significant impacts, especially for drivers traveling between Seattle, Wenatchee, and Yakima early in the week.

“If you’re traveling for Thanksgiving, plan for extra time and monitor the latest forecasts,” meteorologists warned. “Snow will continue to develop behind the cold front, with the potential for more accumulations later in the week.”

Timing and Travel Impacts

The incoming front will reach the Puget Sound region late Sunday, followed by colder air that will allow snow to accumulate quickly over the Cascade passes. Roads through the Mount Rainier National Park area and the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest are also expected to be affected.

Drivers should be prepared for:

  • Reduced visibility from falling and blowing snow
  • Slippery conditions on mountain passes
  • Chain requirements if snow accumulates rapidly overnight

More Snow Possible Into Thanksgiving Week

After the initial wave, additional systems could bring more snow mid- to late week, further complicating holiday travel across Washington’s mountain regions.
Meteorologists continue to monitor the possibility of lower-elevation snow during nighttime hours as temperatures drop.

Travelers are advised to check Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) updates for road conditions before heading out.
