Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Shakes Gilroy, California — Tremors Felt Across Bay Area Including San Jose and San Francisco

GILROY, CALIFORNIA — A magnitude 4.2 earthquake rattled parts of Northern California late Wednesday, striking just east of Gilroy and sending tremors across the Bay Area, including San Jose, Fremont, and San Francisco.

According to early data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at a shallow depth east of Gilroy in Santa Clara County, with reports of light shaking extending as far north as Oakland and south toward Salinas. The quake was strong enough to be felt widely, but there are currently no reports of injuries or significant structural damage.

Epicenter and Impact Area

Preliminary reports indicate the epicenter was located roughly 10 miles east of Gilroy, an area known for its proximity to several active fault zones, including the Calaveras and San Andreas faults. The quake hit shortly after 9 p.m. local time, prompting hundreds of residents to log reports through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system within minutes.

Shaking was described as brief but noticeable, with residents in multi-story buildings reporting rattling windows and swaying light fixtures.

“It felt like a quick jolt — strong enough to make me look up, but gone before I could react,” said one San Jose resident in a social media post.

Response and Monitoring

Local emergency officials said they are monitoring the area for potential aftershocks, though early data suggests only minor seismic activity followed the initial quake. The Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Services confirmed that no power outages or transportation disruptions have been reported so far.

The California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) issued a statement urging residents to stay alert for possible aftershocks and to check household emergency supplies as a precaution.

Bay Area’s History of Seismic Activity

The Bay Area sits on some of the most active fault lines in the United States. Wednesday’s tremor serves as a reminder of the region’s ongoing seismic risk, particularly near Gilroy and Hollister, which lie close to the Calaveras Fault system.

Experts say earthquakes of magnitude 4.0–4.5 in the region are not uncommon but can serve as wake-up calls for preparedness, especially with denser urban development spreading outward from San Jose.

“Even moderate earthquakes like this are reminders that California is earthquake country,” said one USGS seismologist. “It’s important to make sure you have a plan and supplies ready.”

Residents React Across the Bay Area

Social media quickly lit up with reports from people who felt the quake in San Francisco, Oakland, and Fremont. Many described it as a “sharp, single jolt” lasting just a few seconds.

No tsunami threat was issued following the event.

Authorities are continuing to gather data on the quake and any potential aftershocks. Residents can view updated seismic activity maps at earthquake.usgs.gov.
