MICHIGAN — A modest warm-up is spreading across parts of the state Monday, March 2, 2026, following a colder weekend. While southwestern Michigan climbs back into the 40s, much of the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula remain locked in the 20s and 30s.
High temperatures today show a clear north-to-south contrast. In Kalamazoo and Niles, highs are forecast near 44 degrees, with Grand Rapids around 40 degrees and Muskegon close to 40 degrees as well. Lansing is expected near 39 degrees, while Jackson reaches around 38 degrees.
In southeastern Michigan, temperatures are a bit cooler, with Detroit near 37 degrees, Pontiac around 38 degrees, and Flint about 36 degrees.
Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Stay Colder
Across northern Michigan, colder air continues to dominate. Traverse City is forecast near 35 degrees, Gaylord around 31 degrees, Alpena close to 32 degrees, and Cheboygan near 31 degrees.
In the Upper Peninsula, highs remain even chillier. Marquette is near 33 degrees, Escanaba around 34 degrees, Houghton close to 35 degrees, and Ironwood around 37 degrees. Farther east near Sault Ste. Marie, temperatures may only climb into the upper 20s. Despite the afternoon warming, many areas started the day with wind chills and air temperatures below zero before rebounding toward these daytime highs.
Gusty Winds and Lake Superior Gale Warnings
Winds today are generally gusting between 10 and 20 mph statewide, but stronger gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected in and around the western Upper Peninsula. Gale warnings remain in effect on Lake Superior, reflecting the stronger wind conditions impacting marine areas.
Pleasant but Breezy With Low Rain Chances
Precipitation chances remain low for most of Michigan today. Skies are expected to be partly to mostly sunny statewide, offering a generally pleasant — though breezy — early March afternoon. Rain chances are expected to increase beginning Tuesday, but for now, the focus remains on the temperature contrast between southwestern Michigan’s milder readings and the colder north.
