Tornado Watch Issued Across Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas Until 4 AM as Storms Near Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Kansas City Raise Tornado Threat

DES MOINES, IOWA — A new tornado watch has been issued across portions of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas as a dangerous line of storms moves through the region late tonight. Forecasters warn that the storm system could produce tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds as it tracks across several states through the overnight hours.

The watch remains in effect until 4:00 AM CST, covering multiple communities including Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Davenport, Kansas City, Kirksville, and Columbia.

Storms Already Moving Through Parts of Iowa and Missouri

Radar imagery shows thunderstorms stretching across parts of central and eastern Iowa into northern Missouri, with strong storms currently impacting areas near Marshalltown, Grinnell, Ottumwa, and Centerville.

Additional storms are developing farther south near Moberly, Macon, and Columbia in Missouri, moving eastward toward communities including Quincy and Hannibal. Meteorologists say these storms could strengthen as they continue moving through the region overnight.

Tornadoes, Large Hail and Damaging Winds Possible

The tornado watch indicates that significant tornadoes are possible, particularly in areas where storms become organized into rotating supercells. Forecast probabilities highlight a moderate tornado risk, along with the possibility of strong winds and hail.

Wind gusts exceeding 60 mph may occur in stronger storms, while hailstones larger than one to two inches could also develop within the most intense cells. These hazards could cause localized damage to buildings, vehicles, and trees.

Overnight Timing Raises Safety Concerns

Because the severe weather threat is expected to continue into the overnight hours, meteorologists emphasize the importance of remaining alert while storms move through the region.

Residents are encouraged to keep weather alerts enabled on their phones and have a safety plan ready in case warnings are issued during the night. Having sturdy shoes and emergency supplies nearby can also help residents respond quickly if severe weather strikes while people are sleeping.

Communities Urged to Monitor Weather Alerts

Cities across Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas remain under the tornado watch as storms continue moving eastward. Officials advise residents to stay aware of the rapidly changing weather conditions and be prepared to take shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued. Meteorologists continue monitoring the evolving storm system as it pushes across the Midwest overnight, with updates expected as new warnings or advisories are issued.
