Northern Illinois Temperatures Surge Toward 80 Degrees by Tuesday With Chicago, Rockford and Peoria Seeing Early-March Warmth

NORTHERN ILLINOIS — A significant warmup is set to unfold across the region over the next several days, with temperatures climbing steadily from the 60s on Sunday into the 70s Monday and approaching 80 degrees by Tuesday across many parts of Illinois.

Forecast maps show a strong warming trend developing statewide, with cities including Chicago, Rockford, Peoria, Champaign, Springfield, Effingham, Pontiac, and Moline all experiencing a noticeable jump in temperatures as the week begins.

While the warmer weather may feel more like late spring than early March, forecasters say this type of pattern can sometimes lead to more active and unstable weather conditions later in the week.

Sunday Brings Mild Temperatures Across Illinois

Temperatures on Sunday are expected to rise comfortably into the lower to mid-60s across most of the state.

Forecast highs include:

  • Rockford: around 61°F
  • Chicago: near 62°F
  • Moline: around 64°F
  • Peoria: about 64°F
  • Pontiac: near 63°F
  • Springfield: around 65°F
  • Champaign: about 62°F
  • Effingham: near 63°F
  • Mount Vernon: around 64°F
  • St. Louis region: about 65°F

These readings are already several degrees warmer than typical early-March temperatures, marking the start of a warming trend across the region.

Monday Temperatures Jump Into the 70s

By Monday, much warmer air spreads across the state, pushing temperatures solidly into the upper 60s and low to mid-70s.

Projected highs include:

  • Rockford: about 69°F
  • Chicago: near 68°F
  • Moline: around 71°F
  • Peoria: near 73°F
  • Pontiac: around 72°F
  • Springfield: about 74°F
  • Champaign: near 72°F
  • Effingham: around 73°F
  • Mount Vernon: about 74°F
  • St. Louis region: close to 76°F

The widespread warmth will make Monday feel more like late April than early March across Illinois.

Tuesday Could Bring Near-80 Degree Heat in Some Areas

The warmest day of the stretch appears to be Tuesday, when temperatures climb even higher across much of Illinois.

Forecast highs include:

  • Rockford: about 72°F
  • Chicago: around 68°F
  • Moline: near 76°F
  • Peoria: around 79°F
  • Pontiac: near 78°F
  • Springfield: about 79°F
  • Champaign: near 77°F
  • Effingham: around 77°F
  • Mount Vernon: close to 78°F
  • St. Louis region: potentially reaching 81°F

These temperatures are exceptionally warm for early March and could approach record levels in some locations.

Warm Pattern Could Lead to Active Weather Later

Meteorologists note that rapid warmups this early in the spring season can sometimes signal an active weather pattern.

The surge of warm air moving into the region may create conditions that support stronger storms or shifting weather patterns later in the week. In addition, there are early indications that cooler air could return later, bringing the possibility of changing weather conditions across northern Illinois by midweek.

For now, residents across northern Illinois can expect several days of unseasonably warm temperatures, offering a brief preview of spring before the season officially arrives.
