Texas Braces for Another Cold Front Sunday Morning Bringing Gusty Winds, Falling Temperatures, and a Widespread Freeze by Monday

DALLAS, TEXAS — A fresh cold front will sweep through Texas early Sunday morning, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures, gusty winds, and the first widespread freeze of the month by Monday morning. Meteorologists say the front will move in by sunrise, quickly replacing mild air with much colder and drier conditions.

Cold Front Arrives Early Sunday Morning

The latest forecast shows the front pushing through North and Central Texas just before dawn Sunday. Ahead of the system, temperatures will linger in the upper 40s to low 50s, but strong northwest winds of 25 to 30 mph will follow behind the front, causing a rapid temperature drop throughout the day.

By mid-morning, most of the region—including Dallas, Fort Worth, Abilene, and Lubbock—will see temperatures in the low 40s, though wind chills will make it feel more like the mid-30s. Clouds are expected to clear by late afternoon, allowing sunshine to return, but highs will remain well below seasonal norms.

The National Weather Service reports that overnight lows will dip into the mid-20s to low 30s across much of North and Central Texas by early Monday, marking a widespread freeze across the region. Areas farther south, including Houston and Austin, will likely drop into the mid to upper 30s, with patchy frost possible in suburban and rural areas.

Gusty Winds and Clear Skies to Follow

Behind the front, strong northwest winds will persist through Sunday afternoon, gusting up to 30 mph before tapering off by evening. These winds, combined with the temperature drop, will make outdoor conditions feel significantly colder than the actual air temperature.

Forecasters note that while Sunday’s highs may reach the low 50s, the feels-like temperatures will hover around the mid-40s throughout the day. Clear skies overnight will help accelerate cooling, setting the stage for freezing conditions by dawn Monday.

First Hard Freeze of December for Many Areas

This front marks the first significant cold outbreak of December for Texas, following a chilly start to the month. The freeze will be widespread across the Panhandle, North Texas, and Hill Country, with frost likely forming even in sheltered southern zones.

Residents are urged to protect pets, plants, and exposed pipes as temperatures drop into the 25°–32°F range Monday morning. Agricultural and construction operations should also take precautions against the freeze and wind impacts.

Looking Ahead

After Monday morning’s freeze, forecasters expect temperatures to gradually moderate through midweek, with highs returning to the 60s by Wednesday. However, another cold front may approach late next week, keeping Texas locked in a pattern of chilly mornings and breezy afternoons for much of December.

Travelers across I-35, I-20, and I-45 corridors should prepare for reduced visibility early Sunday due to low clouds and wind-blown dust in some areas.
