Damaging Winds Large Hail and Tornadoes Possible Across Northern Colorado SE Wyoming and Eastern Plains With Heat Returning Tuesday Through Wednesday

COLORADO AND SURROUNDING REGION — A shortwave disturbance is moving across northern Colorado, southern Wyoming, and Nebraska Monday June 8th, bringing a significant severe weather threat to the north and east while southern Colorado remains dangerously hot. Severe storms are expected to fire along and north of a line from Colorado Springs through Hugo to Lamar by no later than 2 to 3 PM, with damaging winds, large hail, and a couple of brief tornadoes all possible as storms grow upscale through the afternoon.

Temperatures run about 10 degrees cooler north of I-70 compared to Sunday, while areas south of I-70 remain intensely hot.

Severe Storms Fire by 2 to 3 PM Across Northern Colorado Into SE Wyoming

The SE Wyoming and I-80 corridor faces strong to severe storm potential Monday with highs in the 70s to low 80s, a dramatic cooldown from recent days. Storms initiating along the Colorado Springs to Hugo to Lamar corridor will track north and east into a more favorable environment, growing upscale into clusters capable of damaging winds and large hail.

A couple of brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out across northeastern Colorado, the western Nebraska Panhandle, and northwestern Kansas as discrete supercells develop before upscaling.

Eastern Plains and Western Nebraska Face Severe Storms With 80s to Low 90s

The eastern plains into western Nebraska and western Kansas carry a severe storm risk Monday with highs reaching the 80s to low 90s. Damaging winds and large hail are the primary threats as storm clusters strengthen and push eastward through the afternoon and evening.

The mountains and Continental Divide will see scattered showers and storms through the day with highs ranging from the 50s to 70s by elevation.

Heat Surges Back Tuesday Through Wednesday Before Cooling Late Week

The brief severe weather and cooler pattern north of I-70 Monday is short-lived, with the shortwave ridge building back in Tuesday and Wednesday to bring the heat roaring back across the region. Starting Thursday, temperatures will gradually cool back toward the 70s and 80s heading into next weekend, bringing relief from the extended heat event and increasing storm chances with the pattern change.
