Tornado Outbreak Possible Across Illinois Including Chicago, Peoria, and Springfield With Multiple EF-3+ Tornadoes and Destructive Winds Threatening Wednesday

ILLINOIS — Meteorologists are expressing serious concern about Wednesday’s severe weather setup across Illinois, with models continuing to hint at several discrete supercells firing during the mid-to-late afternoon and evening hours. If the setup unfolds as currently indicated, the region faces a serious risk of multiple large, strong to intense tornadoes reaching EF-3 or stronger — a remarkable and dangerous scenario for a June severe weather event.

Multiple Discrete Supercells Could Produce EF-3+ Tornadoes Mid-to-Late Afternoon

The most dangerous scenario for Wednesday involves several discrete supercells developing across Illinois during the mid-to-late afternoon hours. Discrete supercells in an environment with this level of shear and instability are highly efficient tornado producers, and multiple cells operating simultaneously would create a significant tornado outbreak scenario.

The HRRR future radar valid at 6:00 PM CT Wednesday shows intense storm cores covering a broad swath from Davenport and Rockford southward through Peoria, Champaign, and Springfield, with additional heavy activity pushing through Chicago, Kankakee, and South Bend.

Even a Line Transition Does Not Remove the Tornado Threat

The primary failure mode for this event would be storms upscaling quickly into a line of thunderstorms rather than staying discrete. While this would suppress some of the large tornado threat, it would not eliminate it — any semi-discrete or discrete supercell out ahead of the line would still carry a significant tornado threat.

Additionally, even a full squall line in this environment would produce tornadoes and destructive damaging winds across a wide swath of Illinois and Indiana. Regardless of which storm mode dominates, the outcome is expected to be intense.

Forecasters Describe Setup as Remarkably Dangerous for June

Forecasters are noting that this type of setup in June is unusual and concerning. If conditions unfold as currently modeled, Wednesday could turn into one of the more significant severe weather outbreaks in recent memory for Illinois.

Residents across the entire state should have shelter plans fully finalized before Wednesday afternoon and treat any tornado warning issued with immediate life-safety urgency.
