Delaware Could See First Snowfall Before Thanksgiving as Cold Front Approaches
WILMINGTON, DELAWARE — Delaware could see its first snowflakes of the season just in time for Thanksgiving travel, according to new forecasts from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC). The upcoming late-November cold front may bring colder air, a few flurries, and a touch of early winter weather to parts of the state.
Meteorologists say the region will stay warmer and mostly dry through early November, but the pattern is expected to shift around November 18–24, allowing colder air from the north to sweep into the Mid-Atlantic.
That transition could lead to light snow or a wintry mix across inland areas including Wilmington, Dover, and Newark, while southern Delaware and the coast are more likely to see rain.
First Hint of Winter Across the First State
The CPC’s October 24 update suggests that temperatures will drop sharply heading into Thanksgiving week, with the possibility of the first trace or dusting of snow across northern Delaware.
While no major accumulations are expected, forecasters say even a small amount of snow could lead to slick spots on roadways during early holiday travel periods. “This isn’t a major winter storm by any means,” one NOAA meteorologist said, “but it may be the first sign that winter is around the corner.”
For residents who enjoyed a warm and mild October, the sudden change could feel dramatic. Overnight lows may fall into the low 30s, while daytime highs could struggle to reach 40°F during the coldest stretch of the pattern.
Travelers Advised to Stay Alert Ahead of Thanksgiving Week
With Thanksgiving travel ramping up, even minor weather systems can cause delays. Transportation officials urge drivers to monitor local forecasts, especially for early-morning commutes when slick conditions are more likely.
“If flurries or a light glaze develop, bridges and overpasses can ice up quickly,” the Delaware Department of Transportation warned. “It doesn’t take much for temperatures near freezing to cause patchy black ice.”
The first snow of the season often arrives in mid- to late November for northern Delaware, so the timing fits within seasonal norms. Still, with El Niño patterns and lingering warmth earlier in the month, the brief appearance of snow could mark the state’s first true taste of winter.
Winter Outlook Still Developing
While this system appears minor, forecasters are watching broader climate patterns for potential shifts later this winter. The CPC’s long-range outlook indicates a mix of milder southern air and cold northern fronts, creating conditions for frequent temperature swings across the Mid-Atlantic.
For now, Delaware residents can expect rain and mild air through early November, followed by a short burst of cold weather that could briefly transform parts of the state into a wintry scene before Thanksgiving.
