Drone Search in South Sioux City Helps Police Capture Man After Armed Threat Report
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NEBRASKA — A tense situation in South Sioux City ended safely Thursday night after law enforcement used drone technology to locate and arrest a man who allegedly threatened to kill people in a nearby neighborhood.
According to the South Sioux City Police Department, officers received a distress call from a man walking in the 2000 block of 4th Avenue who claimed he had a rifle and intended to shoot people. Responding units arrived quickly and spotted the suspect running westbound.
With the suspect on the move, additional agencies were called to assist, including the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and Sioux City Police Department.
“We would’ve had a long night if we didn’t have the drones,” said Sgt. Shawn Jensen of South Sioux City Police. “With the drone technology, we pinpointed him down after a while. The officer operating the drone directed our team right to him.”
Man Located Using Drones After Hour-Long Search
Authorities said the man managed to evade officers for over an hour in an area east of Nebraska Highway 77. Using multiple drones, police eventually located him in the 700 block of West 21st Street.
Officers then moved in and used a less-lethal bean bag round to subdue the suspect safely.
“The drones made all the difference,” Jensen added. “Without that aerial view, it would’ve taken us much longer to find him.”
No Injuries Reported, Suspect Taken Into Custody
Officials confirmed that no one was injured, and the suspect did not have a firearm on him at the time of arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to the Dakota County Jail.
The incident remains under investigation. Police have not released the suspect’s name or additional details regarding potential charges.
Authorities praised the coordinated effort between local and state agencies and credited drone technology with preventing a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.
