Grand Junction Weather Alert: Flood Watches and Warnings Remain in Effect Through Tuesday
GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO — A surge of tropical moisture has placed much of western Colorado under flood watches and warnings through Tuesday, as persistent rain and scattered thunderstorms continue to move across the region. The National Weather Service in Grand Junction said conditions will remain unsettled with the risk of flash flooding in mountain valleys and along steep terrain.
Heavy Rainfall and Flash Flood Risk
Forecasters reported that deep tropical moisture streaming into the area is expected to bring 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain, with higher totals possible over the San Juan Mountains. The Flood Watch will stay in effect until noon Tuesday, covering multiple counties across southwest Colorado. In addition, an Areal Flood Warning remains in place near Vallecito, while a Flood Warning continues along the San Juan River at Pagosa Springs.
Officials warned that saturated soils and repeated heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding, mudslides, and debris flows, especially in burn scar areas, canyons, and low-lying regions.
Impacts and Safety Precautions
Meteorologists caution that stronger storms may also bring gusty winds, lightning, and small hail through Tuesday morning. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and never attempt to cross moving water, as just a few inches can sweep away vehicles.
Residents should also monitor local alerts, secure outdoor items, and keep multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight as rainfall continues into Tuesday morning.
Forecast Outlook and Local Impact
The heaviest rainfall is expected to taper off by late Tuesday, though isolated showers may linger in mountain areas. Conditions are forecast to improve midweek with cooler temperatures and drier air returning by Wednesday afternoon.
Communities across Grand Junction and the San Juan Mountains are advised to remain vigilant as runoff and water levels could remain elevated even after the rain ends.
