Kansas City Doctor Severely Injured in Hit-and-Run Transferred for Specialized Care as Police Continue Search for Driver
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — A Kansas City doctor critically injured in a September hit-and-run has been transferred to a Colorado hospital for specialized neurological care, while police continue to search for the driver responsible for the crash.
Dr. Saswat Das, a pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Mercy Hospital, was biking home from work on the evening of September 17 when he was struck by a car near 39th Street and Harrison Parkway.
The driver fled the scene, leaving Das with severe head trauma and other life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he has spent weeks undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit.
Doctor’s Remarkable Recovery Progress
Despite the extent of his injuries, Das has made what his family calls “miraculous progress.”
His cousin, Sanjna Pradhan, shared that he has stunned ICU staff with his determination and resilience.
“He’s been sitting up for hours, writing, standing, eating, and even speaking a few words,” Pradhan said. “He’s an inspiration to everyone who meets him.”
On Tuesday, Das was transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility in Colorado, where he is expected to spend the next two months focusing on neurological rehabilitation to rebuild mobility and cognitive function.
Police Still Searching for the Driver
As Das continues his recovery, Kansas City police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver.
Investigators released surveillance photos of a red 2013–2020 Ford Fusion seen leaving the crash area shortly after the incident. The car may have damage to the driver’s side mirror, police said.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the vehicle or driver to come forward.
“We believe someone in the community knows who this driver is,” a KCPD spokesperson said. “Every lead counts — and this family deserves answers.”

Family Pleads for Justice
Dr. Das’s family continues to hold out hope that the driver will be found and held accountable.
“Saswat has dedicated his career to saving children’s lives,” Pradhan said. “He didn’t deserve this. Whoever did this needs to do the right thing and come forward.”
The hit-and-run investigation remains active, and police are reviewing additional surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
