Major Cold Blast to Hit the Midwest and South Early Next Week, Bringing 20s and First Hard Freeze
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — A significant blast of cold air is heading toward the Midwest and the southern United States early next week, with temperatures expected to plunge into the 20s in some areas, according to WYFF 4 Chief Meteorologist Chris Justus.
The cold front is set to move through by Sunday, but the coldest air will settle in during the early part of next week, marking a dramatic shift from recent fall weather.
Forecast Calls for 20s, Light Snow, and Hard Freezes
Meteorologists are warning that the incoming system will bring the first hard freeze of the season to many southern regions, along with a touch of light snow in the mountain areas.
“This will be a shock to the system for many people,” Justus said in his latest update. “While it’s completely normal for this time of year, the drop in temperatures will feel dramatic.”
The accompanying forecast map shows a strong area of below-average temperatures sweeping eastward, with much of the central U.S. — including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee — expected to experience morning lows in the 20s and low 30s.
What to Expect in Illinois and Surrounding States
In Illinois, forecasters say Chicago and the western suburbs could see overnight lows dip near freezing by Monday and Tuesday, while southern parts of the state may experience their first hard frost of the season.
Residents are being advised to protect sensitive plants, disconnect outdoor hoses, and prepare for heating systems to kick into high gear.
“This is the kind of cold front that makes you suddenly reach for the winter coat you haven’t seen since March,” said Justus. “It’s right on schedule climatologically, but it will still take some getting used to.”
Typical but Noticeable for November
Meteorologists note that November cold snaps like this are common across the Midwest, often marking the beginning of a more sustained period of chilly air leading into winter.
“This front is not historic, but it’s a clear signal that the season is shifting,” said weather analyst Bill Karins. “The air mass behind it is strong enough to bring widespread freezing temperatures, even into areas of the South that have yet to experience frost this fall.”
Early Signs of Winter Ahead
The upcoming cold wave could also bring light snow showers in parts of the Appalachians and Midwest, though no major accumulation is expected.
Still, the shift serves as a reminder that winter is fast approaching, and this cold blast could pave the way for more consistent temperature drops heading into mid-November.
So while meteorologists emphasize that this pattern is “completely normal,” they agree that next week’s arrival will definitely be a wake-up call for those enjoying the last of fall’s mild days.
