Maryland Man Bitten by His Own Dog, Then Accidentally Shot by Police Trying to Stop the Attack
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — A 33-year-old man was hospitalized after being bitten by his own dog and then accidentally shot by police who were attempting to subdue the aggressive animal, according to Baltimore authorities. The chaotic scene unfolded on St. Paul Street on October 26, after officers responded to an emergency call about a violent dog attack inside a home.
Dog Turns on Owner During Sudden Attack
Police say officers arrived at the 900 block of St. Paul Street around 4:44 p.m. following reports of a dog bite. When they reached the scene, they met the dog’s owner, who told them his pet had suddenly become aggressive and attacked him. The man reportedly tried to confine the animal in another room but failed as the dog continued to attack, forcing him to flee his own home for safety.
Police Fire at Dog, Accidentally Hit Owner
As officers entered the home, the dog charged again, prompting two officers to open fire in an effort to stop the animal. The dog was fatally shot, but one of the bullets struck the owner in the leg, police confirmed. The victim was rushed to a local hospital with both multiple bite wounds and a gunshot injury. Authorities said he was last listed in stable condition.
Investigation and Department Response
Police officials described the incident as an “unfortunate accident” and said the case remains under investigation. The officers involved have been placed on routine review pending further findings. Animal control officials have also been notified to assess whether the dog had a history of aggression or prior complaints. Residents in the neighborhood told local reporters that the man had lived there for several years and was often seen walking the same dog daily without any apparent issues.
Baltimore Police say the department will evaluate body camera footage to determine the sequence of events during the shooting.
