Weather Alert: Fall Frost

Maryland-Virginia Weather Alert: Fall Frost Expands Inland as Coastal Winds Strengthen Through Saturday

ANNANDALE, Virginia — The Mid-Atlantic will see a sharp shift to true fall conditions this weekend, with the season’s first widespread frost advisory inland and gusty coastal winds stirring flooding concerns along the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac.

First Frost of the Season for Northern Maryland

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Frost Advisory remains in effect for portions of Harford and Cecil counties, where overnight lows are expected to dip near freezing in rural valleys by early Sunday.

Residents in frost-prone zones are encouraged to cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and watch for slippery bridges or patchy fog during the early commute.

“This will be the first real taste of frost for many areas north of the I-95 corridor,” forecasters said Friday afternoon.

Coastal Flooding and Rising Winds Along the Bay

At the same time, a Coastal Flood Watch is in place for Anne Arundel County and nearby shoreline communities. Persistent northeast winds up to 20 mph are expected to push water levels higher through late Friday and Saturday, raising the potential for minor tidal flooding during high tide cycles.

Travelers along Route 50 and I-95 should anticipate gusty crosswinds and reduced visibility at times during passing showers.

Weekend Outlook: Showers, Then Sunshine Returns

Saturday will bring increasing clouds and scattered rain moving north through the afternoon. Winds may make outdoor plans uncomfortable at times, but conditions will gradually improve late Sunday as drier air moves in.

By Sunday night, skies are expected to clear across the region, ushering in crisp mornings and bright afternoons — ideal weather for pumpkin patch visits and fall foliage drives by midweek.
