Portland Liquor Store Owner, 73, Suffers Brain Bleed After Being Dragged by Thieves During Robbery

PORTLAND, OREGON — A 73-year-old Portland woman is in the hospital with severe injuries — including a brain bleed and multiple broken bones — after she was dragged down the street by thieves who stole alcohol from her liquor store.

The victim, identified as Anna Hyde, owns a local liquor store in Portland. Her daughter, Jennifer Fuller, told reporters that her mother was injured while trying to retrieve stolen merchandise from the suspects’ vehicle.

Attempt to Stop Thieves Turns Tragic

According to Fuller, the suspects had stolen several bottles of alcohol when Hyde tried to intervene.

“She reached into their car to grab the alcohol, and they slammed the door on her arm,” Fuller said. “It got trapped, and they started to drive away — dragging her across the gravel parking lot.”

Hyde’s daughter described the horrifying moment her mother was pulled down the street, hitting the ground hard and suffering catastrophic injuries.

“She completely broke the right side of her body and hit her head,” Fuller said. “They dragged her with her arm caught in the car.”

Multiple Fractures and Severe Head Injuries

Hyde was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a brain bleed, a broken hip and femur, a fractured hand, and multiple lacerations across her body.

“She’s just been lying in bed with five breaks in her femur,” Fuller explained. “She has a big laceration on her hand, one on her back, and a gash on the back of her head.”

Family members say she remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Police Investigation Underway

The Portland Police Bureau confirmed that its Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident. Detectives are reviewing security footage that shows the suspects’ vehicle fleeing the scene.

No arrests have been announced as of Tuesday evening.

Authorities have not released a description of the suspects or their vehicle but are urging anyone with information to contact investigators.

Community Shock and Support

The brutal nature of the attack has shaken local residents and small business owners, many of whom expressed concern about rising retail crimes targeting independent stores.

“She’s someone who has worked hard her whole life and shouldn’t have to face something like this,” one customer told reporters. “It’s heartbreaking.”

A GoFundMe campaign has reportedly been launched to help cover Hyde’s medical expenses and business recovery while she undergoes surgery and rehabilitation.

Police Urge Caution for Business Owners

Portland authorities reminded store owners to avoid confronting thieves directly, urging them instead to call 911 immediately.

“Property can be replaced. Lives cannot,” said one officer familiar with the case.

Hyde’s daughter, still emotional, says she’s just grateful her mother is alive. “She’s tough,” Fuller said. “But she didn’t deserve this. No one does.”
