South Carolina Man Sentenced to 35 Years for Shooting Girlfriend in Neck After Cheating Confrontation
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for attempted murder after shooting his girlfriend in the neck during a heated confrontation over allegations of infidelity.
According to the Spartanburg County Solicitor’s Office, 26-year-old Kelbrez Stringer was found guilty by a jury on multiple charges, including possession of a weapon during a violent crime, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and firing into a dwelling.
Incident Stemmed From Cheating Allegations
The violent encounter took place in April 2023 in Spartanburg. Prosecutors said Stringer had borrowed his girlfriend’s car, but she later received a call claiming he had used that same car to cheat on her.
When the woman confronted Stringer, an argument quickly escalated. As she attempted to leave, Stringer opened fire at her car more than 40 times, according to investigators. Nine bullets struck the vehicle, and one hit the victim in the neck.
Despite her wound, the woman managed to drive away and dial 911 for help. First responders located her shortly afterward and transported her to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she underwent emergency treatment. She ultimately survived the shooting.
Victim’s Courage Praised in Court
During Stringer’s trial, the prosecution highlighted the victim’s bravery in facing her attacker in court and sharing her story.
“The victim was brave to face her attacker in open court and fight to make sure this dangerous person would go to prison for a long time,” said Assistant Solicitor Eddie Hunter, who prosecuted the case.
Stringer was convicted of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, discharging a firearm into a dwelling, and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
Community Reaction
Authorities say the sentencing sends a strong message about gun violence and domestic disputes. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of early intervention and community support in preventing similar tragedies.
Despite suffering life-threatening injuries, the victim’s testimony was instrumental in securing the conviction. “Her strength is what helped bring justice,” Hunter added.
