Strong Storms to Hit Central Illinois Saturday Before Cold Front Ushers in Fall Chill
LINCOLN, ILLINOIS — A powerful cold front is expected to sweep through Central Illinois on Saturday, bringing a round of strong to severe thunderstorms followed by a noticeable drop in temperatures by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln.
Severe Weather Threat Saturday
Forecasters predict that showers and thunderstorms will begin early Saturday and continue through the evening, with the most intense storms likely to form east of the Illinois River.
The NWS says damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning will be the main hazards, and a few storms could approach severe limits during the afternoon hours. Storm chances range from 80–90% across much of the region, with the risk of localized flooding where rainfall is heaviest.
“This system will bring a strong line of storms through the region before temperatures drop sharply behind the front,” meteorologists said.
Sharp Cooldown Follows Storms
Once the cold front moves through late Saturday night, skies will clear and temperatures will tumble. Highs are expected to fall from near 80°F on Friday to the low 60s by Sunday, while overnight lows could dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
By Monday and Tuesday, residents can expect dry, sunny, and seasonable autumn weather, with light winds and crisp mornings.
Residents Urged to Stay Weather-Aware
Authorities urge residents to monitor alerts from the National Weather Service and prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, especially for those attending outdoor events or traveling Saturday afternoon and evening.
Strong winds may cause downed branches or power interruptions, and drivers are encouraged to use caution on wet roads during the heaviest rainfall periods.
