California Driver Pulled Over for Using Hand-Drawn License Plate, CHP Says
MERCED, CALIFORNIA — A California driver went viral for all the wrong reasons after a highway patrol officer pulled them over for using a hand-drawn license plate that looked more like an art project than an official state tag.
‘Something Looked Off,’ Officer Says
The California Highway Patrol’s Merced station shared details of the stop on social media this week, saying an officer noticed something “unusual” about the vehicle’s rear license plate during a patrol. Upon a closer look, it turned out the plate was completely handmade, featuring drawn letters, numbers, and even a mock registration sticker.
“We’ll give this driver points for creativity,” the CHP joked in its post.
The driver told the officer they had lost their original license plate and made the replica to “stay compliant.”

CHP Offers Friendly Reminder
While the officer may have admired the effort, CHP reminded the public that California law requires state-issued plates only.
“While we appreciate the effort to stay compliant after losing the original plate, California law requires vehicles to display state-issued plates only,” the department wrote. “If your plates are lost or stolen, you can easily get replacements through the DMV instead of breaking out the art supplies.”
The image shared by CHP shows the driver’s creative attempt — complete with a hand-drawn California logo and registration decal, both colored in pen.
Social Media Reaction
The post quickly drew attention online, with commenters amused by the driver’s “DIY spirit.” Some joked that the effort could have earned an “A+ for effort, F for legality.”
Officials say anyone who loses their license plate should report it immediately and request a replacement through the Department of Motor Vehicles to avoid fines or legal trouble.
