Dallas Couple’s Honeymoon in South Africa Turns Chaotic After Baboons Invade Their Hotel Room
DALLAS, Texas — What was supposed to be a dream honeymoon for a Dallas couple turned into a chaotic wildlife encounter after a group of baboons broke into their hotel room during a South African safari trip, leaving behind destruction, stolen items, and one unforgettable story.
TikTok user Kendall (@_kendallnf) shared the viral incident in a video that has since gathered more than 130,000 views, warning future travelers to take local advice seriously when staying in wildlife-rich areas.
“This is a PSA to anybody that is thinking about honeymooning in Africa on a safari,” Kendall said. “They told us when we checked in, ‘Don’t forget to lock the doors every time you leave.’ We did—except for once.”
That single moment of forgetfulness led to an unexpected invasion. When the newlyweds returned from dinner, they found baboons loitering outside their room, and inside — complete chaos.
‘They Drank Our Mini Bar Dry and Ate 200 Fiber Pills’
According to Kendall, the scene inside looked like “a tornado went through.”
“When my husband opened the door, one was defecating on his suitcase,” she recalled. “The baboons had trashed the place — drawers open, clothes everywhere, and half our stuff missing.”
The animals reportedly raided the minibar, emptied bottles, and even devoured an entire container of 200 fiber pills. In her follow-up clip, Kendall showed the aftermath — debris scattered across the room and hotel staff working to clean the mess.
Despite the mess, the couple managed to see humor in the ordeal.
“Don’t be like us,” she said. “Remember to lock your doors. You have nobody to blame but yourselves for this.”
Why Monkey Break-Ins Are a Real Issue
Incidents like this aren’t rare in safari lodges and nature resorts across Africa. Baboons and monkeys are notorious for sneaking into guest rooms and raiding food supplies.
Experts say many species have learned how to open doors and windows after years of close contact with tourists. Hotels in wildlife areas often use reinforced locks, electric fencing, and even trained staff to deal with such intrusions.

Hotel management reportedly handled Kendall’s situation quickly.
“Apparently this happens a lot, so they knew exactly what to do,” she said. “Fortunately, none of the furniture was broken or anything like that, so no official damage charges — but we were glad to tip the housekeeping staff that helped get the room back in order.”
Travelers Share Their Own Monkey Encounters
After Kendall’s story went viral, hundreds of viewers chimed in with similar experiences.
“In Costa Rica, I had a spider monkey go into my backpack and steal my bottle of tea,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “Locking doesn’t even stop them — they break in! They had a time with our minibar and all of my vitamins.”
Others simply sympathized, laughing at the absurdity of it all.
“OMG the same thing happened to us,” one user exclaimed. “You are not alone.”
The couple says they still look back on their safari fondly — though they’ll never again underestimate the cleverness of Africa’s wildlife.
