Snow Winter Advisory Alert

Early Sierra Snow Hits Nevada Mountains as Winter Advisory Remains in Effect

RENO, NEVADA — An early winter storm system is sweeping across western Nevada, bringing a mix of valley rain and mountain snow that’s expected to last through Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for elevations above 6,000 feet, cautioning travelers about slippery roads and reduced visibility in the Sierra.

Snow Blankets Sierra Passes Overnight

Forecasters say 1 to 3 inches of snow could accumulate at higher elevations, with isolated totals up to 6 inches near Mount Rose Summit and Donner Pass.
Rain began falling across the Reno–Carson–Minden corridor Tuesday afternoon before transitioning to snow in the mountains overnight. The advisory warns that snow levels could drop to 6,000 feet, affecting I-80 west of Verdi and U.S. 50 near Spooner Summit, where motorists should expect slushy conditions and patchy fog.

Valleys Stay Wet, Mountains See Snow

Lower-elevation communities including Sparks, Gardnerville, and Virginia City will see mostly rain and chilly temperatures in the 40s and 50s. By Wednesday afternoon, showers are expected to taper off as high pressure builds in, clearing skies and bringing a noticeable warm-up.

Warming Trend Later This Week

Once the storm passes, forecasters say sunny and milder conditions will return for the rest of the week. Daytime highs will climb from the upper 50s Wednesday to the low 70s by Saturday, providing a calm and pleasant stretch of weather heading into the weekend.

Drivers planning to travel across Sierra routes are urged to check tire chains, slow down, and keep emergency kits handy, especially before sunrise Wednesday when roads could be slick and icy.
